Amazing pumpkin patches offer great family fun across Nebraska. With hayrack rides, pumpkin picking, corn mazes and more, there’s so much for families to enjoy.
But, if you are looking for great Nebraska pumpkin patches that won’t break your budget, we’ve found some gems.
Nielsen’s U-Pick Kids Pumpkin Patch, Minden.
This pumpkin patch is located just a few miles south of Minden in south-central Nebraska and offers FREE admission! That’s right. There’s no admission for this family-friendly patch.
The only fee that is paid is for the pumpkins and other produce that are purchased. And, even those prices are affordable. The largest pumpkins in the patch (ones that require two people to carry) are just $10. The produce is paid for based on the honor system. Visitors are given a price sheet as they enter the patch that shows the prices for all sizes of pumpkins ranging from 50 cents for a 5-inch pumpkin to $10 for a mammoth pumpkin. Squash, gourds, many varieties of white and orange pumpkins and Indian corn are all available from the 30-acre patch. Visitors mark down their chosen pumpkins and produce on the price sheet, place money in a bag and drop it in a box at the exit.
“People are very honest. You just have to trust people,” said Tamy Nielsen about the honor system pumpkin pricing.
This year, the Nielsens added a Nebraska 150th Anniversary Corn Maze. The unique maze takes visitors down Nebraska highways to find various towns across the state located within the maze. And, visitors can connect with a smartphone app that shows their location in the maze at all times, so there’s no chance of getting lost. The maze is also free and is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers or even a golf cart.
If that’s not enough free fun, the attraction also gives away free slushies, popcorn, fountain pop and cotton candy on weekends!
A special Nebraska 150th Anniversary Celebration is planned at Nielsens on Oct. 7. The family will be serving a free BBQ (hotdogs) and maybe some samples of their produce.
Tamy said the patch attracted about 5,000 visitors last year, and they are expecting and excited for more visitors this season.
“We have so many young families that are hard-working people,” Tamy said. “Sometimes, they can’t afford $10 for each person to get in and then more for pumpkin and treats. We want to have them come out and have some fun and enjoy the day. Kids just scream and yell and have fun, and it’s just heart-warming.”
